Meet Hannah who trained in permanent makeup, 1 to 1 with multi award winning industry expert Katy Jobbins, at The Permanent Makeup Training Academy around 12 months ago.
As she returned for her assessment day, we caught up with her to find out how much her life has changed since going from salon owner, to full time permanent makeup artist…
“I had a beauty salon for 9 years prior to doing the permanent makeup training. I was renting a building where I did beauty and it was an hour from home so I was finding that I was paid just to pay the bills. A lot of travelling, a lot of stress and a job that when I trained in it at just 15 – 16 years old, probably loved it, but when you get to 30 and your still doing it.. I wanted to do something that was a bit of a change and a more permanent result for people.”
Since training 12 months ago…
“It’s been incredible. I have been way busier than I ever thought I would be. I’ve set up a clinic from home. I’ve just hit the ground running with it really. Once I finished all my training I started straight after the lockdown was lifted, so I got a lot of bookings during the restrictions. Now I do it all day, every day now so I can’t complain!”
During Lockdown…
“I built my website, I set up a YouTube channel and did videos and just tried to learn as much as I could about permanent makeup.”
On having Katys additional online support and training videos…
“It is fantastic. You can go log on online anytime night or day and learn more which is invaluable really.”
On why she got rid of her salon…
“For the area we are in, Suffolk, you found that you were doing a lot of treatments to cover the cost of the overheads. Whereas now I can make a lot more money and I don’t have the overheads by doing it from home. It works out as a better life/work balance as well.”
On the financial change…
“I used to get around £29 for nails which took an hour, but also with that you would have the rent and everything coming out as well. Now I have a building in my garden that I run it from which is self sufficient. I now charge £380 for brows, £280 for liner and for lips its £350. (This is around 10-13 times what I used to make per treatment when doing nails with out the overheads), and it’s something I love doing as well.”
On the types of clients she regularly works on…
“For me personally where I live, it’s a more older client base. That’s what I love about Katys work is It’s very natural, which is something when I was looking for a trainer that I wanted to find, somebody that does very natural permanent makeup. Because my clients are a bit older, they are sort of drawn to me as that’s the kind of work that I do, so I found that really helpful.”
On her change of lifestyle…
“I couldn’t be happier. I feel so much less stressed than I did trying to juggle and do everything. Obviously having it from home is a lot easier. Now I can do late nights, I can do weekends. I do free consultations which is nice as a lot of people like to come in the evening and I don’t ever feel rushed. I can sit down and have a chat with them and don’t feel like I’m being pulled each way.”
On building her business…
“I think that once you start putting content out there, more people want it done, so its like a snowball effect. I’m always fully booked up. I think it’s nice as I have the time for the clients now. I generally do a 10am appointment and a 2’o clock appointment. So I can take the time with people and can have a break for lunch & don’t feel like I have to rush quickly through someone in an hour because I have to do a certain amount a day to make it worth the overheads.”
