Hi, My name is Katy Jobbins and I’m the head trainer for the ‘Permanent Makeup Training Academy’ and also a permanent makeup technician with over 50 clinics across the UK.
… I had dreamt of being a permanent make up artist ever since I had my own eyebrows done permanently at age 19 but didn’t really have the guts to go ahead with it.
I made every reason and excuse to NOT do the training.
Things that were going through my mind like, what if it went wrong? It’s a lot of money to invest in training and machinery. What if I did spend all that money & go ahead with the training and no one actually wanted their permanent makeup done by me???
Initially I decided against training in permanent makeup & trained in nails instead. After all, the training was much cheaper & I could still make around £20 per hour!!
Eventually I opened my own nail salon & went on to expand it to include hair-dressers & all aspects of beauty.
The day that changed my life forever…
…after working in my own salon for a few years, employing 5 staff, I had been doing nails all day with no break, talking non stop to clients for hours as a member of staff had called in sick. 2 Clients had been late for their appointments which made me late, so everyone waiting was getting angry with me.
It was the straw that broke the camels back as they say. You were supposed to enjoy your work & I realised that I didn’t need to kill myself working like this. There must be another less stressful more enjoyable way to earn money.
I decided something had to change – and fast.
I’d done my research into permanent make up so many times in the past I knew that I could earn in 1 hour what I could in a week doing nails—and it would be doing what I love. I didn’t truly believe I could earn what all the training companies were saying.
“Part time hours for full time wages”
I trained in permanent makeup, locally with my regular nail and beauty supplier taking a 4 day training course which included my start up kit, and off I went. I loved the course and love learning new things.
– it wasn’t half as scary as I thought..
It was my dream job & I was making between £250 and £400 per hour working between 2 and 3 hours per week (I still carried on doing nails for the first 6 months too) and clients were over the moon with their new eyebrows. However, the more permanent make up I was doing the more frustrated I was becoming with my ever demanding nail clients.
After 6 months of learning permanent make up I was able
to quit doing nails for good..And Close Down the Salon
As a nail technician I always found the job very restricting on my time, I could never go on holiday for more than a week because I had clients, I could never get a full weekend off to spend with my friends and family. Thankfully, after 6 months of learning permanent make up I was able to quit doing nails altogether.
‘Tears of Joy’…
As a permanent make up technician I have the power to change peoples lives for the better. My favourite part of the job is when I perform a beautiful set of eyebrows on a client that has been drawing them in for 20 years & has been the bain of their life. Or a client with alopecia or someone who has lost their eyebrows through chemotherapy. There are usually tears of joy.
A Real Work Life Balance…
Below are some pictures of our family traveling around the world, a lifestyle acquired by doing permanent makeup just a few hours a week.
Being a permanent make up technician has given me a lifestyle I had never dreamed of, I now have had 2 baby boys called Sebastian & Maddox, and I have so much time to spend with him and my family without having to compromise how much I earn. Sebastian experienced holidays to Thai land, Malaysia, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Turkey, Amsterdam and Wales before he was even 10 months old!
How the ‘Permanent Makeup Training Academy’ began & why it is different from any other permanent makeup training company in the UK
I loved my first permanent make up course, but it was very, very basic.
After a few months of training I invested with the same training company to go back and do their advanced permanent makeup training.
I researched almost every training company in the UK but found that they were unwilling to give me their Advanced training unless I bought their full permanent makeup machinery & kit.
After frustration in the UK, to cut a long story short, I ended up traveling across the world training with as many top permanent makeup trainers as I could find, from New York to Thailand, learning all the best skills and techniques each had to offer.
I made the decision to keep training, become the best, offer the best service & charge, what I felt I deserved.
As my reputation grew, clients started coming from everywhere to have their permanent makeup done. They came from London, Leeds, Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall, their friends started coming, their mums, sisters aunties, grandma’s and daughters were coming
…and before long technicians started asking about training with me and shadowing me.
At first, technicians asked to pay to shadow me. They would simply come and watch me do clients & I could see the relief in the technicians faces that they were finally starting to get the help and training they needed.
I’ve Also Won a Number of Awards Along the Way…
As a teacher there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the ‘penny drop’ and your students succeed. I knew that they had experienced the same training frustrations as I myself had.
Over the years I have managed to develop my own techniques in permanent makeup, stemming from all the training I have completed & whilst I had been on my travels, learning from all the best technicians around the world.
…design a unique ‘Complete Permanent Makeup Start-up Training Course’
that I wish had been around when I had first started
